I stood there transfixed like the Statue of Liberty, except that my right hand was rather on the door knob than raised in the air like the real statue. Frozen. Paralyzed. A grown man reduced to a statue in his own house.
Different thoughts flashed through my mind almost at that instant. My head was speaking to me loud and clear. I could have sworn I was hearing voices — actual voices, like a full congregation had gathered inside my skull.
“Guy, go back upstairs if you know what’s good for you. No go fall your hand,” one voice said. Deep. Serious. The voice of wisdom.
“This is so wrong. You are going to cheat on your wife, and that’s not fair,” another voice added. Softer. Gentler. The voice of conscience.
“Guy, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. No loose guard. See free food chop oo,” the third voice countered. Lower. Rougher. The voice of my ancestors — or maybe my village people.
The three voices argued inside my head like judges in a court where I was both the defendant and the jury.
My heart went cold, and as I was about to walk away — back to my room, back to safety, back to sanity — the door knob turned instantly from the other side.
Click.
And behold, Inemesit stood by the door, smiling mischievously.
She had nothing on but her pant and bra.
My eyes almost bulged out as I caught the sight of her cleavages. Cleavages with a capital C. The kind that made you forget your name, your wedding date, and the fact that you had a joint account with your wife.
BLOOD OF SOMEBODY!
I had no idea how it happened, but I found myself boldly walking to meet her as she leaned against the open door. My legs moved on their own. My body had disconnected from my brain. The man walking was not the same man who had been trembling seconds ago.
