MY HUSBAND AND HIS MISTRESS OFFERED ME $150,000 FOR MY NEWBORN TWINS. HIS ENTIRE FAMILY WATCHED, CERTAIN I’D FINALLY BROKEN. I SIGNED WITHOUT A WORD — BUT NO ONE KNEW I’D SPENT SIX MONTHS PREPARING FOR THAT ONE SIGNATURE.
Part 1: The Signature
“Take one hundred fifty thousand dollars, sign the divorce papers, and hand the boys over to me.”
Those were the very first words Nathaniel Cross said to me.
Three days after our twins were born.
I was sitting in a wheelchair inside the discharge room of a hospital in Charleston, South Carolina.
My C-section incision burned with every breath.
I held Ethan and Owen, one in each arm, wrapped tightly in soft blue blankets.
The nurse had just finished walking me through how to care for my stitches.
Then the door swung open without a knock.
Nathaniel walked in first.
Behind him came Vivienne.
Immaculate in stiletto heels.
A crisp white dress that looked chosen specifically to mark my downfall.
Then came his mother, his father, his sisters, his uncles, his cousins.
Even distant relatives I’d only ever met at holidays.
More than twenty people, all told.
They formed a tight half-circle around my wheelchair.
Nobody asked how the babies were doing.
Nobody leaned in to look at them.
Nathaniel set a thick leather folder on the table beside me.
“It’s a generous offer,” he said.
“One hundred fifty thousand, deposited today. You give up full custody. You walk out of our lives. You never come back.”
“Our lives.” Vivienne smiled at that.
My mother-in-law, Regina, crossed her arms.
“Those boys need stability. The Cross name,” she said.
