“He avoided the question.”
Margaret smiled slightly.
“Because he knows what happens when women like you create problems.”
My stomach dropped.
Women like me?
The phrase sounded familiar.
Then I remembered every time Margaret had criticized me during our relationship.
You’re too independent.
You don’t understand family loyalty.
You’re taking Ethan away from the people who love him.
At the time, I thought she was simply an overprotective mother.
Now I wondered if she had always seen me as an enemy.
“What happened to your hand?” I asked.
For the first time, her expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
“I cut myself preparing dinner.”
“That’s interesting.”
“What is?”
“I watched you cook that night.”
She stopped.
“You never touched a knife.”
