For several seconds, Ethan didn’t move.
The entire garden seemed frozen.
The music continued softly in the background, but nobody was listening anymore.
All eyes were on him.
On me.
And on the woman who had just humiliated his mother in front of everyone.
“Mom?”
My son’s voice was barely audible.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
Not completely.
Not yet.
She still believed she could control the story.
She lowered the hose slowly and forced out a laugh.
“Ethan, sweetheart, don’t be dramatic.”
He looked at her.
Then at me.
“Why is my mother sitting on the ground?”
The question was quiet.
But the anger behind it made several guests step back.
