“I won’t.”
He kissed Sophie.
Then he kissed my cheek.
“Love you.”
For half a second, I almost asked him not to go.
Not because I believed the meeting existed.
Because some frightened part of me understood that once I saw whatever was waiting at that lake house, there might be no way to put my marriage back together.
Instead, I smiled.
“Drive safe.”
The door closed behind him.
An hour later, I dropped Sophie at my sister Nicole’s house.
Nicole studied my face.
“You’re sure everything’s okay?”
“I’m checking something.”
“What kind of something?”
“The kind I don’t want to explain until I know I’m not imagining it.”
She didn’t push.
“Call me if you need me.”
“I will.”
Back home, I stood in front of my closet.
