I pulled back and looked into her eyes, seeing every trace of the woman who had left us too soon, but also seeing the bright, resilient young woman she had become. I held her hand and turned toward Walter, who was standing a few feet away with his hands clasped neatly in front of him.
I walked up to the man I had passed by in the hallways for four years without truly seeing. I didn’t shake his hand; I pulled him into a fierce hug. Walter patted my back with his firm, calloused hands.
“I kept my word to her, David,” Walter whispered softly. “She picked a good man to be her daughter’s father. You did every bit of the heavy lifting.”
