I left a message.
Then I searched the property address.
Current tenant listings showed three businesses operating there.
A dental clinic.
An insurance office.
And a small accounting firm.
Something bothered me.
I enlarged the listing.
The accounting firm’s name was familiar.
Harper & Lane Financial Services.
I had seen it somewhere.
It took me several minutes to remember.
Then I opened the audit spreadsheet Daniel had shown me.
One of the recurring transfers from our account—$975 every three months—was labeled:
H&L CONSULTING.
My pulse quickened.
I searched my email.
Three results appeared.
All from Ethan.
One was a forwarded tax document from two years earlier.
The attachment had been prepared by Harper & Lane.
I opened it.
At the bottom was the accountant’s name.
Jonathan Lane.
I didn’t know him.
At least I thought I didn’t.
Then the phone rang.
Daniel.
“I found the property your father referenced,” he said.
“The building in Lakewood.”
Silence.
“How did you know?”
“I found it online.”
“You work fast.”
