“I’ll see you at home tonight, Julian,” I said.
And hung up before he could say anything else.
Priscilla’s forensic team spent the following week pulling apart four months of Julian’s financial activity.
What emerged was considerably more organized than a man simply falling out of love and wanting an exit.
Renata Voss — his cousin, his attorney, the woman on that voicemail — had been retained five months earlier.
The paperwork dated a full month before Julian had even started acting distant at home.
Before the late nights at the “gallery.”
Before any of the small, ordinary signs I’d chalked up to stress.
There’d been three prior consultations with forensic accountants.
All paid in cash.
All scheduled around days I was traveling for the foundation.
There’d been an appraisal request filed quietly with the county assessor’s office for the Aspen property.
Timed, exactly as the voicemail described, to land just before the trust’s annual reappraisal.
A maneuver that, Priscilla explained, could have plausibly reclassified a meaningful slice of the property’s appreciated value as marital rather than separate, had it gone through unnoticed.
“This wasn’t a man reacting to an unhappy marriage,” Priscilla told me, laying the timeline across her conference table. “This was a plan. Built slowly, over months, by someone who had access to information he was never supposed to use this way.”
I sat with that for a long moment.
“Did my mother’s trust structure account for this?” I asked. “Someone planning this deliberately, this far in advance?”
“Your mother built the dual-authorization requirement specifically because she didn’t trust easy access, full stop,” Priscilla said. “Not because she predicted Julian. Because she understood, generally, that people change, and structures built during good years need to survive the bad ones without anyone’s goodwill required.”
Julian came home that evening exactly as he’d promised.
I watched him try, for almost twenty minutes, to find a version of the conversation that put him in a better light.
“I was protecting myself,” he said, standing in our kitchen, still in his coat. “Prenups get challenged all the time, Simone. I was making sure I had representation that actually understood the situation.”
“You don’t need a plan five months in the making to secure representation,” I said. “You need a plan like that to move money before someone can stop you.”
“That’s not what this was.”
“Renata is your cousin, Julian. I don’t need Priscilla’s forensic team to tell me that timing a court filing around a property reappraisal, using inside knowledge of a trust you only ever had limited access to, isn’t standard divorce prep.”
He didn’t have an answer for that.
He tried a different angle instead.
“You’re the one who removed my access without any warning. Doesn’t that feel a little extreme, for someone who claims she wasn’t planning anything herself?”
“I wasn’t planning anything until I heard four minutes and eleven seconds of you planning something first,” I said. “You handed me the reason yourself. I just happened to be listening.”
I never spoke to Renata Voss directly.
Not once through the entire process.
Priscilla dealt with her extensively over the following months.
Described her, more than once, as sharp, aggressive, and clearly caught off guard by how quickly the ground had shifted beneath her client.
