“I FOUND OUT MY HUSBAND WAS PLANNING TO DIVORCE ME THROUGH A BUTT-DIALED VOICEMAIL. SO I MOVED CONTROL OF MY 500 MI.LLI.ON FAMILY TRUST BEFORE HE EVER GOT THE CHANCE. TEN DAYS LATER, HE FILED THE PAPERS — AND WATCHED HIS ENTIRE PLAN COL.LAPSE IN REAL TIME.”

By that afternoon, Julian’s signatory access was revoked across all three accounts.

By the next morning, the trust’s dual-authorization requirement — dormant for two years, ever since I’d trusted him enough to loosen it — was fully reinstated.

By the end of the week, Priscilla had quietly confirmed something else.

Something that made the whole voicemail make considerably more sense.

Julian’s “gallery consultations” for the past four months had actually been meetings with a divorce attorney named Renata Voss.

His own cousin, it turned out.

Practicing under her married name.

Which was exactly why my own background check hadn’t flagged the connection sooner.

Julian came home that evening acting like nothing in the world had changed.

He kissed my cheek in the kitchen.

Poured himself a scotch.

Asked how my day had been.

I told him it had been productive.

He had no idea how true that was.

Ten days later, he placed the divorce papers on our kitchen island like he was presenting me with a gift I should be grateful for.

“I think this is best for both of us,” he said, watching my face carefully for the reaction he’d clearly rehearsed for.

I looked down at the papers.

Then back up at him.

“I agree completely,” I said, and smiled.

Because Julian still had absolutely no idea that the five hundred million dollars he’d spent four months quietly maneuvering to reach was already sitting somewhere he’d never be able to touch it again.

Julian tried his card at the corner coffee shop the next morning.

Declined.

Not because there wasn’t money.

Because it was a card tied to one of the three accounts Priscilla had locked down the day before.

An account that had, until that Tuesday, carried his name as a limited signatory alongside mine.

He called me from the sidewalk, according to what he told me later.

Standing outside the coffee shop with his card still in hand.

“There’s some kind of error with the card,” he said.

Casual.

Like it hadn’t occurred to him yet to be worried.

“I know,” I said. “I removed your access yesterday afternoon.”

Silence on the line.

A long one.

“Why would you do that,” he finally said.

Something in his voice had shifted.

The casualness draining out of it fast.

“Because I heard a very interesting voicemail yesterday morning,” I said. “About windows, and reappraisals, and things not mattering anyway once this is done.”

I heard him exhale slowly.

“Simone—”
