I can’t wait to be late for school again.
The room dissolved into tears.
Even Mr. Howard cried openly.
I laughed through my own sobs.
“Late for school?”
Martha shrugged.
“I have missed enough already, Mom.”
Dr. Collins looked around the room.
“This is why we never erase the wall.”
Then he turned toward me.
“Medicine helped heal Martha’s body.”
He paused before continuing.
“But everyone in this room wanted to protect the little girl inside it.”
No one spoke.
There was nothing left to say.
