MY 4-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER POINTED AT MY BOSS’S EAR AND KEPT SAYING, “DADDY’S THERE” — BUT MY HUSBAND HAD PASSED AWAY, SO WHEN I LOOKED CLOSER, I COULDN’T BELIEVE WHAT SHE WAS ACTUALLY POINTING AT.

MY 4-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER POINTED AT MY BOSS’S EAR AND KEPT SAYING, “DADDY’S THERE” — BUT MY HUSBAND HAD PASSED AWAY, SO WHEN I LOOKED CLOSER, I COULDN’T BELIEVE WHAT SHE WAS ACTUALLY POINTING AT.

The glass nearly slipped from my hand when Lily said it.

“Mommy…”

Her small fingers tightened around Gerald’s shirt.

“That’s Daddy.”

For a second, I thought I’d misheard her.

Music drifted across the pool. Someone laughed near the bar. Water shimmered under the string lights.

But Lily wasn’t looking at any of that.

She was staring at the side of Gerald’s head.

More specifically —

behind his ear.

Gerald went pale.

Not confused.

Not amused.

Pale.

And that frightened me far more than anything my daughter had just said.

Because Lily’s father had been dead for a year.

BEFORE THAT NIGHT

My name is Claire. I was thirty-four when all of this happened.

My husband, Nathaniel, had died of cancer twelve months earlier.

Our daughter Lily had just turned four.

She still talked about him like he was away on a long trip. Sometimes she asked when he’d be coming home. Other nights she wanted to know if Daddy could see her from wherever he was.

I’d stopped trying to give perfect answers. There weren’t any.

Gerald had been Nathaniel’s closest friend for more than twenty years. They’d grown up together, taken road trips together, fished together, made jokes nobody else fully understood.

By coincidence — or maybe not — Gerald was also my boss, at a company in Ashgrove.

When Nathaniel died, Gerald became the person who kept quietly appearing before I even realized I needed help.

A bag of groceries on the porch. A broken appliance mysteriously replaced. A loose cabinet hinge fixed while I put Lily to bed.

If I was too exhausted to function, he’d sit on the carpet and build Lego towers with her while I slept on the couch.

He never asked for anything.

That was what made accepting his help so easy.

And eventually, so dangerous.

“PEOPLE HAVE NOTICED”

The day before Gerald’s company pool party, Marissa caught me near the office coffee machine.

She handed me a mug, then said, “You know people have started noticing, right?”

I frowned. “Noticing what?”

“Gerald.”

“What about him?”

“He’s at your house constantly.”

“He was Nathaniel’s best friend.”

“I know.”

“And he’s helping.”

“I know that too.” She lowered her voice. “But he’s also your boss.”

I stiffened. “So?”

“So you’re a widow who works for him, and he’s basically become part of your household.”

I hated how ugly it sounded, said out loud like that.

“He’s being kind.”

“I’m not accusing him of anything.” Marissa leaned closer. “I’m saying people can’t see what’s in your heart. They see what’s happening.”

I looked away. “Let them talk.”

“That isn’t what worries me.” She touched my arm. “I’m worried you’ve needed help for so long you might not notice when help turns into something else.”

I went back to work. But the sentence followed me all day.

THE PARTY

Gerald had invited the whole office to his house that Saturday. He knew I had nobody to watch Lily, so he told me to bring her.

“She likes coming here anyway,” he said. Then, softer: “Especially because of Nathaniel’s mug.”

That mug had become an odd little ritual. Years earlier, Nathaniel and Gerald had taken a road trip to Lake Thornwood. Nathaniel bought a battered travel mug somewhere along the way. Gerald somehow ended up keeping it.

After Nathaniel died, Lily became fascinated with it. Every visit, she reached for it. Maybe because it had belonged to her father. Maybe because children attach memory to objects better than adults do.

Gerald once told her, “You can have it whenever you want.”

I remember feeling relieved. We still had people. We still had pieces of Nathaniel.

That seemed like enough. At least then.

SOMETHING IN GERALD’S FACE

The party looked like something out of a lifestyle magazine. Lights strung over the patio. The pool glowing blue. People from the office in clothes I’d never choose for an afternoon with a four-year-old.

Lily wore a yellow dress with a faint grass stain near the hem. The second we came through the gate, she spotted Gerald and ran.

“Lily!”

She darted around two guests before I could catch her. Gerald intercepted her first, lifting her into his arms. “Got you.”

She laughed. I hurried over.

“Gerald, I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“She’s running around your guests.”

“She’s four.” He shifted her against his side. “Nobody’s going to collapse because a child touched the patio.”

I almost smiled.

Then Lily went still. Her eyes locked on something near his ear. She leaned closer.

Gerald noticed. His smile faded. “Sweetheart?”

Lily’s hand lifted slowly. “Mommy…”

I stepped nearer. “What is it?”

She pointed. “Daddy.”

I stared at her. “What?”

“Daddy’s there.” Her voice turned urgent. “Look!”

Gerald put her down. Too fast — she nearly lost her balance. That alone made me look at him. His face had drained of color.

Lily pointed again. “Mommy, Daddy’s there! You have to save him!”

Several guests had started listening. My cheeks burned. I dropped to her level.

“Baby, Daddy isn’t here.”

“He is!”

I pulled her close, then looked at Gerald. “I’m sorry.”

He didn’t answer right away. “She misses Nathaniel.”

I tried to laugh. “Sometimes she gets confused.”

Gerald nodded, but his eyes never met mine. “Of course.”

Then he stepped backward. “I need a minute.” And walked away.
