Your mother-in-law lowers her eyes.
And says nothing.
That silence is worse than the garbage on the church floor. Worse than the sour smell rising between your white shoes. Worse than the whispers slicing through the pews behind you.
Father Anthony waits, his face calm but his eyes sharp.
“Teresa,” he says again, softer this time. “Tell the truth.”
Your fiancé, Julian Whitmore, turns toward her. His face is pale, confused, humiliated.
“Mom,” he says, “you’re ruining my wedding.”
That is when Teresa finally looks at him.
Not with anger.
Not with pride.
With fear.
Raw fear.
Your hands tighten around the bouquet. Three months ago, Teresa hated you openly. She called you “the preschool teacher from Queens” as if teaching children was a disease. She corrected your pronunciation at dinner, mocked your rented apartment, and once told Julian, right in front of you, that “women like her marry up because hard work failed them.”
But this?
This is different.
This is not cruelty for sport.
This is desperation.
Father Anthony steps closer. “Teresa, if there is a lawful or moral reason this marriage cannot happen, you must say it now.”
The whole church goes still.
You look at Julian.
For the first time since you met him, he does not reach for you.
He keeps his eyes on his mother.
And something cold moves through your chest.
Your father bends toward you. “Elena, we can leave. Right now.”
You want to say yes.
You want to turn around, walk out of St. Michael’s Cathedral in Manhattan, rip off the veil, and let the rich Whitmore family keep their marble aisle and poisoned silence.
But Teresa is staring at you now.
Her mouth trembles.
And suddenly you understand something that terrifies you.
She did not throw garbage at you because she wanted to shame you.
She threw it because she needed the wedding to stop before someone else did something worse.
“Say it,” you whisper.
Your voice is small, but the church hears it.
Teresa’s eyes fill with tears.
Then Julian steps between you and his mother.
“No,” he says sharply. “We’re not doing this.”
The tone shocks you.
Not because it is loud.
Because it is familiar.
It is the tone he uses when waiters make mistakes. When his assistant forgets something. When the doorman at his building takes too long opening the door.
A tone you had noticed but forgiven because he never used it on you.
Until now.
“Julian,” Father Anthony says. “Let her speak.”
Julian smiles, but the smile has no warmth.
“Father, my mother has been emotional all week. She took medication this morning. She’s confused.”
Teresa flinches.
You see it.
Your father sees it too.
He steps closer to you.
“Medication?” you ask.
Julian turns toward you, and in an instant his face softens into the man you thought you loved.
“Baby, don’t listen to this. She’s overwhelmed. This is embarrassing, but we can fix it. Let the staff clean up, and we’ll continue.”

There is trash on your wedding dress.
His mother is shaking.
The priest looks like he has seen a ghost.
And Julian wants to continue.
Teresa makes a sound, half sob, half warning.
“Don’t marry him.”
The words tear through the church.
Julian turns slowly.
“Mother.”
