A delivery driver stood outside, smiling politely.
“Signature required.”
I signed, thinking it was something routine.

Inside the envelope were divorce papers.

At the top was a short handwritten note:
I’m not coming back. Don’t make this harder.
I just stood there, frozen, one hand resting on my stomach as the baby shifted inside me.
Nine months pregnant… and he chose this moment to walk away.
Before I could even process it, my phone buzzed.
Meet me at Riverside Courthouse at 2. We’ll finalize.
No apology.
No explanation.
Just instructions.
Like I was nothing more than an item on his to-do list.
At the courthouse, Evan was already waiting.
He looked… refreshed. Confident. Like a man who believed he’d already won.
Standing beside him was Vanessa Clarke—his coworker. The same woman he once told me not to worry about.
Her hand rested comfortably on his arm, like it had always belonged there.
Evan glanced at my stomach—and frowned.
Not with concern.
With disgust.
“I couldn’t stay with someone who looks like that,” he said flatly. “It’s depressing. I want my life back.”
A few people nearby turned to stare.
