Even from several yards away, I could see the shape of his face.
The wide forehead.
The narrow chin.
The small crease beside the mouth.
Features I had seen in photographs of myself as a baby.

“No…”
Serena laughed.
Not nervously.
Not out of surprise.
She laughed like she had just been handed something entertaining.
“Well,” she said, lowering her window, “life really does catch up with people.”
Laura looked toward the SUV.
The second her eyes met mine, I felt as if someone had driven a fist into my chest.
She did not look shocked.
She did not look angry.
She looked tired.
That was worse.
Serena leaned toward the open window.
