“You never said that.”
“You weren’t interested in hearing it.”
That shut me up.
I looked at the city through my office windows.
“Find Laura Bennett.”
“She changed her name back?”
“I don’t know.”
“And when I find her?”
“Everything.”
I swallowed.
“Where she’s living. Where she’s worked. Medical records if legally obtainable. Public assistance. Hospital records. And I want every piece of evidence from the divorce reexamined.”
“The transfers?”
“Yes.”
“The hotel photos?”
“Yes.”
“The necklace?”
“All of it.”
Marcus hesitated.
Then he asked the question I had been avoiding.
“What happened?”
“I saw her today.”
“And?”
“She had twins.”
Silence.
“How old?”
“I don’t know. Maybe… ten months.”
Marcus understood immediately.
“Grant.”
And Serena.
I had given Serena temporary access while she was living in our guesthouse.
Laura had questioned it.
I remembered exactly what I said.
Stop being paranoid.
I felt sick.
“Send me everything.”
A file appeared in my inbox two minutes later.
I opened the hospital intake form.
Patient: Laura Bennett Whitmore.
Pregnancy: twins.
Emergency contact: Grant Whitmore.
Relationship: Husband.
Her signature at the bottom shook across the page.
I stared at it for a long time.
Then Marcus called again.
“I found the transfers.”
“What about them?”
“They didn’t come from Laura’s laptop.”
I stopped moving.
“Say that again.”
“The authorization credentials were hers. The device wasn’t.”
“What device?”
My ears began ringing.
