A long pause followed, long enough that I thought the call might have dropped.
“Who’s asking,” she finally said, her voice unsteady now.
“My name is Dale Whitcombe,” I said. “Eighteen years ago, I found two newborn girls wrapped in towels at Sable Point Beach. I think you might know something about that.”
The sound that came through the phone next was somewhere between a sob and a laugh, raw and disbelieving all at once.
“They found the letter,” she said. “After all this time. They actually found it.”
