PART 4
Nora took my hand first, her fingers cold despite the warm kitchen.
“Dad,” she said. “Please don’t hate us after you see this.”
Callie nodded, tears already gathering in her eyes. “We’ve been keeping something from you. For a long time.”
My heart started pounding hard enough that I could feel it in my throat.
“You can tell me anything,” I said. “Both of you know that.”
“We know,” Nora said. “We just didn’t know how, for years. And then it started feeling like the longer we waited, the harder it got to explain why we’d waited at all.”
With trembling hands, I unfolded the white towel first, the one Nora had been wrapped in, running my fingers along the seam the way I had a hundred times before, taking the fabric out every year for that same photograph.
This time, something fell out onto the table.
A small, folded piece of paper, yellowed at the edges, clearly old, clearly hidden inside a seam that had been carefully resewn at some point.
The moment I saw it, all the color drained straight out of my face.
