A long pause.
Then Ethan replied:
“She won’t have a choice.”
I stared at the screen.
The room felt smaller.
The man I had married yesterday had been discussing me like I was a problem to manage.
Not a wife.
A possession.
Then I found the message from three weeks before the wedding.
Margaret:
“After the ceremony, make sure she understands where she stands.”
Ethan:
“Mom, please don’t go too far.”
Margaret:
“You said she needed to learn.”
Ethan:
“I know.”
That was it.
Not stop.
Not leave her alone.
Not protect me.
Just:
I know.
I closed the laptop.
For a few minutes, I simply sat there.
