“She makes everything about being adopted.”
My stomach turned.
“Does she?”
“Yes.”
“What does that look like?”
“She’ll say things like, ‘You love Alex more.’”
“Why would she say that?”
“Because she’s dramatic.”
My voice stayed calm.
“Or because you left her alone in Georgia while taking your biological son to Disney World.”
Natalie went silent.
Then she snapped.
“This is exactly what I mean.”
“You always take her side.”
“She’s a child.”
“So is Alex.”
“Yes.”
“Which is why I’m not blaming him.”
Another silence.
Then.
“You need to stay out of our parenting.”
I looked out the airplane window.
“We’ll discuss that when I arrive.”
Her voice changed.
“You’re coming here?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I almost laughed.
“Why do you think?”
“Steven.”
“You cannot just fly down here and cause a scene.”
