“But the affair with Beth Caldwell does.”

My stomach turned.

“Beth?”

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

“This is insane.”

“Your grandfather and Beth were involved for almost three years.”

“No.”

“Margaret knew.”

“No.”

“She found out when Ethan was twelve.”

I backed away from the table.

My body had become too small to contain what I was hearing.

If Caroline was telling the truth, Ethan and I—

Rachel stood.

“Laura.”

I looked at her.

She had understood before I did.

My mouth went dry.

“No.”

Caroline said quickly,

“Your grandfather wasn’t your biological grandfather.”

The room froze again.

I stared at her.

“What?”

She closed her eyes.

“Your mother was adopted.”

I could not breathe.

“She never told you.”

“Stop.”

“Margaret was adopted as an infant. I wasn’t. We weren’t biologically related.”

“Stop.”

“So you and Ethan are not blood relatives.”

I gripped the chair.

The world had become absurd.

“Why would my mother hide all of this?”

“Because your grandfather begged her to.”

“He was Ethan’s father?”

“Yes.”

“Did Ethan know?”

Caroline’s expression answered before her mouth did.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since he was twenty-seven.”

We married when Ethan was twenty-eight.

My stomach lurched.

“He knew before our wedding?”

“Yes.”

I sat down.

Rachel whispered,

“Jesus.”

I thought I had already discovered the worst thing Ethan could hide.

An affair.

Money.

Fraud.

But he had married me while carrying a family secret involving my mother, his mother, and the fortune that eventually passed through both families.

“Why?”

My voice barely worked.

“Why would he marry me?”

Caroline looked at me with pity.

And I hated her for it.

“Because your mother was the controlling beneficiary of your grandfather’s largest remaining trust.”

Rachel understood.

“He married Laura to stay close to Margaret.”

Caroline nodded.

My heart stopped.

No.

Thirteen years.

A house.

A child.

Birthdays.

Vacations.

Christmas mornings.

Lucas asleep on Ethan’s chest.

Our first apartment.

The night he proposed in the rain.

Was all of it—

“No.”

Caroline leaned forward.

“I don’t think everything was fake.”

“Don’t.”

“He did love you.”

“Don’t say that.”

“But the money—”

“Get out.”

“Laura.”

“Get out!”

Detective Hale stood.

I was shaking so hard I could barely see.

Rachel held my shoulders.

I whispered:

“He married me for access.”

Caroline said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

PART NINE

Lucas’s Letter

They found Ethan the next morning.

Not abroad.

Not hiding.

He was sitting in my mother’s old apartment.

The lease had not yet ended because I had been slowly clearing it.

He had a key.

Of course he did.

Police found shredded paperwork in the bathtub.

Two passports.

Twenty-six thousand dollars in cash.

And a handwritten note.

But it was not a confession.

It was addressed to Lucas.

During a freezing walk in Central Park, my wealthy mother suddenly froze. On a wooden bench sat the ex-girlfriend I left 5 years ago, holding 3 babies with my exact knuckle dimples. As she woke, she handed me a torn envelope and rasped, “Your mother said you signed their death warrants.” Seeing the forged signature inside, my heart stopped, then shattered into a million pieces of absolute, silent fury directed at the woman who raised me…
