Hours After Our Wedding, My Mother-in-Law Ordered Me to Wash the Family’s Dirty Clothes and “Learn My Place”—When My Husband Sl@pped Me for Refusing, I Left Without Telling Him Who He Had Actually Married

The house Owen had never seen

My driver didn’t take me to the apartment.

He took me forty minutes north to a gated property overlooking the Chattahoochee River.

The guard recognized me immediately.

“Ms. Monroe?”

“I’m fine, Daniel.”

He noticed my split lip.

His expression said he did not believe me.

But he opened the gate.

At 1:18 in the morning, I walked into a home Owen never knew existed.

Five bedrooms.

Glass walls facing the river.

A private office occupying most of the second floor.

And inside that office sat the real version of the woman he thought he had married.

I changed out of my wedding dress.

Photographed my injuries.

Called my physician.

Then I called my attorney, Naomi Bishop.

She answered on the third ring.

“Cass?”

“I need two things.”

Her voice became instantly alert.

“What happened?”

“I need an emergency divorce filing prepared. And I need you to contact security at Monroe Alder before eight.”

There was a pause.

“Did Owen hurt you?”

“Yes.”

The single word tasted bitter.

Naomi swore under her breath.

“Do you need police?”

“Not tonight. I’m safe.”

“We document everything.”

“I already started.”

“Good.”

Then I opened my laptop.

One email sat near the top of my inbox.

Price Dynamics — Final Investment Committee Review

Owen’s company.

For nine months, Price Dynamics had been trying to raise Series B financing for a logistics automation platform.

Their software was promising.

Their cash management was terrible.

Their previous lead investor had walked away.

Payroll reserves were shrinking.

Vendors were beginning to demand faster payment.

Without a major capital injection, Price Dynamics had perhaps ten weeks before serious trouble.

Owen knew his company was vulnerable.

What he didn’t know was that the investment firm preparing to offer him $8.4 million was mine.

The deal had reached Monroe Alder because one of my partners liked the technology.

I discovered Owen’s involvement six weeks earlier.

Instead of killing the deal, I had recused myself from direct negotiations.

I wanted him to succeed on merit.

I had even planned to reveal my identity during our honeymoon and tell him I would support the investment if the committee approved it independently.

That future was gone.

At 2:06 a.m., I sent one message to our general counsel.
