“Yes.”
“I’ll wait.”
“No!”
Too fast.
We both heard it.
I looked toward Adrian’s closed door.
“Owen.”
He swallowed.
“He’s in a meeting.”
“With Vanessa?”
His eyes moved away.
That was my answer.
I walked past him.
He did not try to physically stop me.
I opened the office door.
At first, what I saw did not register as betrayal.
Vanessa was sitting behind Adrian’s desk.
Not in one of the visitor chairs.
Behind his desk.
Her shoes were off.
Adrian’s suit jacket was draped over her shoulders.
Adrian stood beside her pouring champagne into two glasses.
Champagne.
At eleven forty in the morning.
They were laughing.
Then Vanessa saw me.
The laughter stopped.
Adrian turned.
All color left his face.
“Claire.”
I held the paper bag.
