SOME PEOPLE SHOW THEIR TRUE COLORS WHEN THEY GET A LITTLE SUCCESS.
I ignored that too.
Then Dad posted something.
FAMILY IS ABOUT LOYALTY, NOT CONTROL.
That one almost made me laugh.
I turned off social media.
Then I went to the spa.
By dinner, I had stopped checking my phone entirely.
That was when I met Daniel.
He was sitting alone at the bar outside the steakhouse.
Late forties.
Gray at the temples.
Quiet.
He noticed my wristband.
“Penthouse?”
I looked down.
“Apparently it’s obvious.”
“I’m in one too.”
He lifted his wrist.
Same gold band.
“Daniel.”
“Tessa.”
He nodded toward the empty seat.
“Waiting for someone?”
“No.”
“Neither am I.”
I sat.
We talked for almost an hour.
He owned a small chain of veterinary clinics.
Recently divorced.
Traveling alone for the first time in twenty years.
No flirting.
No pressure.
Just conversation.
At one point, he asked why I was traveling alone.
I almost said work.
Then I stopped.
“No.”
“What?”
“I was about to give the polite answer.”
“What’s the impolite one?”
“My family kicked me off the cruise I paid for.”
Daniel stared.
Then laughed.
He immediately covered his mouth.
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
“It’s funny now.”
I told him the short version.
He listened.
When I finished, he said something simple.
“They didn’t think you’d stop paying.”
“No.”
“They thought the money was already theirs.”
“Yes.”
Daniel nodded.
“My ex-wife did something similar.”
