“I mean after the cruise too.”
Her voice trembled.
“I understand.”
For once, she did not push.
The next day, Lauren confronted me again.
This time, there was no anger at first.
Only panic.
We were in Mexico.
I was returning from a café near the port.
She hurried toward me.
“Tessa.”
I kept walking.
“Please.”
I stopped.
“What?”
“Jason left.”
I blinked.
“What do you mean?”
“He got off the ship.”
“We’re in Cozumel.”
“He booked a flight home.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
Lauren looked humiliated.
“Because we fought.”
“About?”
“Money.”
Of course.
She looked down.
“He thought everything was paid.”
“It was.”
“Before you removed it.”
“I didn’t remove the cruise.”
“I removed extras.”
“I know.”
She wiped her eyes.
“He didn’t bring enough money.”
“Neither did I.”
Lauren looked at me.
“You have money.”
“I meant when I was twenty-three.”
She frowned.
“I learned not to travel assuming someone else would pay.”
“That’s not fair.”
“There it is.”
“What?”
“Every time reality touches you, you call it unfair.”
Lauren started crying.
Normally, that would have destroyed my resolve.
I hated watching my sister cry.
I had rescued her for years because of it.
This time, I stayed still.
“What do you want?”
She took a breath.
“Can you help me get home?”
“The ship returns in two days.”
“I don’t want to stay.”
“Then book a flight.”
“I don’t have enough credit.”
I closed my eyes.
“How much?”
Her face lifted.
That tiny reaction told me she expected me to save her.
I almost did.
Then I remembered the group chat.
Drama-free vacation.
Glad Tessa decided she was too busy.
I opened my eyes.
“No.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
“I’m not paying.”
“Tessa.”
“You asked me to stop holding money over you.”
“I’m doing that.”
“This is different.”
“No.”
“You always say that.”
She stared at me.
“So you’re just going to leave me here?”
“You’re on a luxury cruise.”
“You’re not abandoned.”
She looked furious again.
“I’m your sister.”
“Yes.”
