Nolan didn’t say a word. He looked at the open duffel bag, the claw hammer on the floor, the smashed keypad, and then stared directly into his mother’s eyes.
“The police are already on their way,” Nolan said, his voice flat and terrifyingly quiet. “I suggest you spend the next five minutes getting your stories straight.”
Tessa began to tremble violently. Maribel took a hesitant step toward him, holding out her hands. “Nolan, please… I’m your mother.”
Nolan wrapped his arms tighter around Elara, feeling her faint, rapid pulse. “Tonight, the police aren’t escorting my mother and sister out of this house. They’re arresting two felons for violent assault and grand larceny.”
In the distance, police sirens rose beneath the thunder and came racing closer.
And Nolan had no idea that the nightmare he had just caught on camera was merely a fraction of the torture Elara had been suffering in silence for months.
Part 2
The moment uniformed officers surged into the bedroom, Maribel changed before their eyes.
She threw herself to her knees, weeping hysterically and claiming that Elara had attacked them after being caught stealing. Tessa whimpered behind her, claiming she had picked up the hammer in self-defense.
Nolan unlocked his phone, holding it out to the lead officer. “Before you take any statements, watch this.”
The high-definition video left zero room for interpretation. It clearly captured Maribel demanding the safe combination while pinning Elara down, and Tessa talking about fencing the stolen bearer bonds before Nolan returned from his trip.
The officers snapped handcuffs onto both of their wrists on the spot.
As the paramedics loaded Elara onto a stretcher to transport her to Bellhaven Medical Center, Nolan remembered how many times over the past few months Elara had smiled weakly and told him, “Your mother is taking such good care of me, sweetie.”
Two hours later, an ER physician walked out into the waiting room.
