The little girl opened her dark eyes for one fleeting second and released a tiny sigh.
Nolan bowed his head and wept without hiding it.
Elara, exhausted but glowing, smiled from the hospital bed. “Look at her, Nolan. She’s perfect.”
Nolan walked over, leaning down to kiss his wife’s forehead. “You both are.”
Weeks later, on a quiet Sunday evening, Nolan walked out onto the back terrace with his daughter sleeping peacefully against his chest. From the living room, he could hear Elara singing softly as she arranged fresh lilies in a glass vase.
He thought about an old phrase he had heard his entire life: “Blood is thicker than water.”
For years, he had interpreted that saying as an absolute command—as if sharing DNA gave people an automatic license to demand, manipulate, demean, and exploit without limit.
He knew better now.
DNA merely explains a biological connection. It does not guarantee love, it does not guarantee loyalty, and it never gives anyone the right to abuse another human being.
Maribel had given him life, but Elara had built a life with him.
