Not anger.
Fear.
For the first time since I left the anniversary dinner, Ethan sounded afraid.
“Rachel, there are things you don’t understand.”
“Then start explaining them.”
“I can’t over the phone.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t know who you’ve spoken to.”
The sentence chilled me.
“What does that mean?”
“Have you talked to Daniel?”
I went still.
“How do you know Daniel is my attorney?”
Silence.
“Ethan?”
“I assumed.”
“No, you didn’t.”
He said nothing.
“How do you know his name?”
The line remained quiet for several seconds.
Then Ethan whispered, “Don’t trust every document he shows you.”
My heart began pounding.
“What documents?”
Another pause.
Too long.
“Ethan.”
“I have to go.”
He hung up.
I stood in my kitchen holding the phone against my ear long after the call ended.
Lily appeared in the doorway.
“Mom?”
I immediately lowered the phone.
“Hey.”
“Is Dad okay?”
I forced my expression to soften.
“He’s upset.”
“Are you?”
“Yes.”
