My husband slept with his boss, so I quietly stole her handsome husband instead. “He’s so amazing,” I told her at the company’s party while… she stood there shaking with rage.

“Well, Bethany,” she purred, pitching her voice loud enough for the surrounding executives to hear. “I must admit, I’m shocked Gavin brought you tonight. We usually reserve these galas for the permanent fixtures in our lives, not the temporary stepping stones we outgrow on our way to the top. I suppose you wanted to enjoy one last taste of luxury before you return to your modest little life.”

The insult was brutal, a deliberate public execution designed to humiliate me. I looked past her shoulder at Gavin. My husband stood completely silent, staring at the floor, perfectly willing to let me be socially slaughtered to secure his promotion.

A year ago, this would have broken me. Tonight, my pulse remained dead steady. I took a slow sip of my champagne and offered Veronica a smile so terrifyingly calm that her confident smirk visibly faltered.

Before I could speak, the crowd behind her parted like the Red Sea.

Harrison Caldwell moved through the sea of executives with the devastating authority of a man who owned the city. He walked straight past his wife, completely ignoring her outstretched, fawning hand, leaving her grasping at empty air. A collective gasp rippled through the senior partners.

Harrison stepped directly into my personal space, reaching out to wrap his large, warm arm firmly around my waist, pulling me flush against his side. The physical claim was absolute and undeniably shocking.

Gavin physically recoiled, panic washing over his face as he watched the billionaire venture capitalist effectively claim his wife. Veronica stood frozen, the color draining entirely from her face. The supreme confidence she wielded seconds ago shattered into a dawning, terrifying comprehension.

I looked her dead in the eyes and delivered the killing blow.

“He is so amazing,” I told her, my voice crystal clear in the sudden silence as Harrison leaned down and kissed my cheek. “He has been such a wonderful support system while you and Gavin have been spending all those late nights in Manhattan hotel rooms. I think the luxury suite you prefer was 412, if I remember the corporate billing records correctly.”

The silence that crashed down on the ballroom was deafening. The string quartet faded into nothingness. Veronica began shaking with pure, unadulterated rage, her designer glass trembling so violently that champagne spilled onto her expensive shoes.

Survival instincts kicking in, Gavin resorted to his favorite weapon. He stepped forward, his face flushed red. “I am so sorry about this,” he announced to the horrified board members, his voice pitching with raw desperation. “My wife is not well. She had a mental breakdown a few weeks ago. She’s suffering from extreme paranoia and delusions. Please excuse her hysterical episode—”

“I am not having a breakdown, Gavin,” I interrupted, the sound of my cold, genuine laugh cutting through his gaslighting like a razor blade. “I am having a breakthrough. And as a crisis manager, I never walk into a room to make an accusation without bringing the receipts.”
