The Day We Had Been Waiting For
After two years of treatment, Dr. Collins entered Martha’s room carrying an expression I had never seen before.
He looked at the chart.
Then at my daughter.
“I have been waiting a very long time to say this.”
The room became completely still.
“Your treatment is officially complete.”
For one heartbeat, none of us moved.
Martha whispered:
“So I get to ring the bell?”
Dr. Collins laughed.
“I believe you have earned it.”
News spread across the entire floor.
Doctors stepped out of their offices.
Nurses left the medication station.
Parents paused outside patient rooms.
Even children still receiving treatment smiled from wheelchairs lining the hallway.
Martha wrapped both hands around the bell rope.
Before pulling it, she looked at me.
“Ready?”
I nodded through tears.
She pulled.
The bell rang once.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Cheers filled the corridor.
People who had never met my daughter applauded as if she had scored the winning goal in a championship game.
Someone handed her balloons.
Nurse Angela hugged me so tightly that I nearly dropped our overnight bag.
“We’re going to miss her,” she whispered.
“We’re going to miss all of you.”
We hugged the people who had become our second family.
