Adrian went completely still.
“YOU HAVE NOWHERE TO GO.”
His voice dropped.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“You’ll destroy this family.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“You already did.”
Then he tried one final tactic.
The soft voice.
The voice that had pulled me back a hundred times.
“Claire.”
He stepped closer.
“You’ve got nowhere to go.”
I almost smiled.
Then Sophie walked into the hallway.
Pauline in her arms.
Adrian’s face drained of color.
Sophie held up the recorder.
Then pressed Play.
His own voice filled the house on Willowcrest Lane.
Threatening her.
Threatening me.
Telling her to disappear.
Adrian stood frozen.
His mouth opened.
No words.
I walked toward Sophie.
Took her hand.
Then walked straight past my husband.
Outside, Lola’s car was already waiting.
I FINALLY LEFT WILLOWCREST LANE
Adrian called after me.
I didn’t turn.
For years, I believed leaving would mean losing everything.
The house.
Financial security.
Marriage.
Stability.
That night, I discovered staying had already cost me far more.
My daughter.
My confidence.
My ability to recognize fear for what it was.
So I left.
MONTHS LATER
The legal process was slow.
The stolen funds moved through the courts.
