Before either of them could say another word…
Two uniformed police officers stepped off the elevator.
One of them approached the nurses’ station.
“We’re looking for Mrs. Emma Sterling.”
My heart skipped.
“I’m Emma.”
The older officer removed his hat.
“Ma’am…”
“We received a report from hospital staff concerning possible child neglect and unlawful confinement.”
“I understand you may be the victim.”
The social worker stepped forward.
“I made the report.”
“And I have a witness.”
She pointed towards the waiting room.
Mrs. Alvarez stood up from her chair.
The elderly woman who had opened her door when no one else would.
She walked over carrying something in her hands.
“My doorbell camera recorded everything.”
She handed the officer a small flash drive.
“It shows Emma pounding on every apartment door while holding that baby.”
“You can hear her begging for help.”
The younger officer accepted it carefully.
“Thank you.”
Mrs. Alvarez wasn’t finished.
“I also recorded something else.”
She looked directly at me.
“Yesterday morning…”
“I saw her mother-in-law leaving the building with two suitcases.”
“The baby was crying.”
“Emma was banging on the living room window.”
“The older woman never looked back.”
The officer’s jaw tightened.
“Did you recognize her?”
“I’ve lived across the hall for six years.”
“I’d recognize that woman anywhere.”
The social worker quietly closed Noah’s file.
Then she looked at the officers.
“The hospital is placing a temporary security hold on the infant.”
The older officer frowned.
“For medical reasons?”
“For safety reasons.”
