FULL STORY They buried me up to my neck in the backyard dirt for days while I was pregnant11-008

“That’s what we’re investigating.”

I looked at the photograph again.

“Is that her?”

“We don’t know yet.”

My mother leaned forward.

“What does she have to do with them?”

Daniel looked between us.

“That’s the part that doesn’t make sense.”

“What do you mean?”

“She disappeared from official records almost twenty years ago.”

The room became quiet.

“Disappeared?”

“Not physically. Legally.”

I frowned.

Daniel explained carefully.

“Her name appears in old documents, then suddenly stops. No updated address. No employment records. No public information.”

“That happens,” I said.

“Sometimes.”

He looked at the photograph.

“But usually not with someone who appears connected to a family.”

I felt a chill.

“What kind of connection?”

Daniel closed the folder.

“We don’t know yet.”

—

That evening, I went through old memories.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed to.

I opened the boxes I had avoided since leaving my husband’s house.

Photos.

Cards.

Small pieces of a life I had built before everything became complicated.

I found our wedding album.

For a while, I just looked at the pictures.

There we were.

Smiling.

Young.

Certain.

There was a version of me in those photographs who believed love meant two people protecting each other from the world.

I missed her.

But I didn’t pity her.

She had done the best she could with what she knew.

Then I saw something.

A detail I had never noticed before.

In the background of one wedding photograph stood my husband’s mother.

And beside her…

Someone else.

My hands went cold.

I pulled the picture closer.

It wasn’t the woman from the old photograph.

But it was someone I recognized.

Someone I had met.

Someone I had trusted.

My husband’s aunt.

The woman who had always been kind to me.

The woman who had brought gifts when I was pregnant.

The woman who had hugged me after every family gathering.

I stared at her face.

Why was she standing beside my husband’s mother that day?

Why had nobody mentioned her connection to this?

—

The next morning, I called Daniel.

When he arrived, I handed him the photograph.

He studied it.

“Who is this?”

“My husband’s aunt.”
