OUTSIDE THE ROOM
Nneoma’s eyes widened in anger as the doctor walked out.
“What do you mean you’re stopping?!” she yelled.
The doctor looked at her, disgust written all over his face.
“I almost became a murderer because of you.”
Her husband stepped forward angrily. “Don’t forget you took our money!”
The doctor didn’t flinch.
“I’d rather lose my license than my soul.”
Nneoma’s face twisted with rage.
“You think you can just walk away?!”
But before anything else could happen—
SIRENS echoed outside the hospital.
Police cars.
Multiple.
Fast.
And loud.
The doctor’s eyes widened.
“Looks like your plan just ended.”
The sound of sirens tore through the hospital like a storm.
Patients turned. Nurses froze. Even the walls seemed to listen.
And then—
The glass doors BURST open.
Miriam ran in.
Her hair was disheveled, her face soaked in tears, her chest rising and falling like she had outrun death itself.
“WHERE IS MY SON?!” she screamed.
The entire reception area fell silent.
A nurse rushed forward. “Ma’am, please—”
“DON’T TOUCH ME!” Miriam snapped, her voice shaking with rage. “My son… where is Samuel?!”
Before anyone could answer—
She saw them.
Nneoma.
Standing there.
Calm.
Cold.
Like nothing had happened.
For a second, Miriam froze.
Her world narrowed.
Her vision blurred.
And then—
Something inside her broke.
“You…” she whispered.
Then louder—
“YOU!”
Miriam lunged forward, grabbing Nneoma by her clothes.
“You took my son! WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM?!” she cried, shaking her violently.
Nneoma tried to push her off. “Stop this madness—”
SLAP!
The sound echoed.
Everyone gasped.
“You sold your own nephew?!” Miriam screamed. “You… you’re not human!”
THE TRUTH SPILLS OUT
Police officers rushed in, separating them.
“Enough!” one officer shouted.
Nneoma’s husband tried to slip away quietly—but two officers grabbed him immediately.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“I—I didn’t do anything!” he stammered.
But it was too late.
The doctor stepped forward.
“I’ll tell you everything,” he said firmly.
All eyes turned to him.
He pointed directly at Nneoma and her husband.
“They brought the child. They offered me money to remove his kidneys for their son.”
A wave of shock rippled through the room.
Miriam staggered back, her hand covering her mouth.
“No… no… this can’t be real…”
But the doctor continued.
“I refused to continue the operation. The child is alive—but barely. He needs immediate care.”
Miriam didn’t wait.
She ran.
INSIDE THE ICU
Machines beeped softly.
The room smelled of antiseptic and fear.
And there—
On the bed—
Lay little Samuel.
So still.
So pale.
So small.
“M-my baby…” Miriam whispered, her voice breaking into pieces.
She rushed to him, falling to her knees beside the bed.
“Samuel… mummy is here… please wake up…”
Her hands trembled as she touched his tiny fingers.
“They said you were strong… they said you’d be okay…” she sobbed.
Tears dropped onto his hand.
For a moment—
Nothing happened.
Then—
A faint movement.
Samuel’s fingers twitched.
Miriam gasped.
“Samuel?!”
His eyes fluttered slightly.
A weak… fragile breath escaped his lips.
“M… mummy…”
Miriam broke down completely.
“YES! YES, I’M HERE!” she cried. “I’m here, my baby… I’m here…”
OUTSIDE THE ROOM
Nneoma sat on the cold floor, her hands cuffed.
Her face was no longer proud.
No longer cold.
