My father-in-law came to inspect the home my parents had gifted me, but after my husband began assigning its rooms to his relatives and insisted I hand over the keys, a single statement brought the color draining from his father’s face.

A cold, quiet smile.

“In our culture,” I said, “there is also a tradition of respecting a woman’s property. There is a tradition of honoring a gift. There is a tradition of not taking advantage of someone’s generosity. You seem to have forgotten those traditions.”

I picked up my phone.

“I can call my lawyer right now,” I said. “I can have a restraining order filed against every single person you mentioned. I can make it illegal for any of them to come within 500 meters of this property. Do you want me to do that?”

Chief Okonkwo’s face was now a deep shade of purple.

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“Try me.”

For a long moment, no one moved.

Then Mama Emeka grabbed her husband’s arm.

“Let’s go,” she said quietly. “We’ll talk about this tomorrow.”

Emeka looked at me.

“Ngozi, please. Let’s just calm down and—”

“There’s nothing to talk about,” I said. “This house is not a negotiation. It’s not a discussion. It’s my property. And I am not sharing it with anyone who doesn’t respect me or my parents.”

I walked to the front door.

I opened it.

“You can leave now,” I said. “And don’t come back until you’ve learned to treat me like a person. Not a doormat. Not a resource. Not an obstacle. A person.”

Chief Okonkwo stormed past me without another word.

Mama Emeka followed, casting one last venomous look over her shoulder.

Emeka lingered.
