“I am afraid of messing things up. Of ruining your marriage. Of losing my job. Of losing you.”
Her voice broke on the last word.
“So I silently accepted a better option. Rather than allow my heart to put us in trouble, I decided to stay away. To keep my distance. To just do my work and disappear.”
She smiled — a sad, broken smile.
“At least this way, I still get to see you every day. Even from afar. Even through the cracks in the door. Even if you never look at me again… at least you are still here. And for now, that is all that matters.”
I stood there, frozen.
Her words washed over me like rain on dry ground. Like water on a seed that had been waiting for years to grow.
She loves me.
She has been hiding it.
She has been suffering in silence while I thought she was avoiding me out of fear or anger or indifference.
She loves me.
I stepped toward her.
“Inemesit,” I said, my voice thick with emotion, “look at me.”
She looked up.
Her eyes were red. Her cheeks were wet. Her lips were still parted from the kiss.
“I was wrong,” I said. “I came here to apologize. I came here to take back my question. I came here to tell you that I was selfish and foolish and unfair.”
I reached out and took her hands. They were cold. Trembling.
“But I was wrong about something else too.”
“What?” she whispered.
“I was wrong to think that I could walk away from you. I was wrong to think that space would heal anything. I was wrong to think that pretending you did not exist would make this feeling go away.”
I squeezed her hands.
