My father shoved me into the fountain at my perfect sister’s wedding and laughed while the guests clapped along. What he didn’t know was that my husband had already walked into the hotel—with a security team behind him.

“My security team witnessed everything. If Claire chose to press charges, you’d already be speaking to NYPD.”

“You can’t be serious—”

“You put your hands on her and assaulted her in public.”

My mother tried to intervene weakly.

“There’s no need for—”

Ethan cut his gaze toward her.

“You watched.”

She fell silent immediately.

Then, as if the night hadn’t already spiraled beyond reason, two federal agents entered the ballroom.

One of them approached me directly.

“Assistant Director Bennett,” he said, handing me a secure tablet. “We need authorization on the Mercer operation.”

The title rolled through the room like thunder.

My father blinked. “Assistant Director?”

I scanned the briefing quickly.

Three suspects. Two locations. One intercepted communication thread.

“Proceed with surveillance escalation,” I ordered calmly. “No arrests until we confirm secondary contact.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

The agent stepped back.

The entire ballroom stared at me.

Savannah looked physically ill.

“You work for the FBI?” my father asked weakly.

“I told you years ago.”

“You said government.”

“You heard secretary.”

Ethan’s voice remained calm beside me.

“Claire is the youngest Assistant Director in division history.”

Silence.

Pure silence.

Savannah recovered first.

“So what?” she snapped. “We’re all supposed to applaud now?”

I finally looked directly at my sister.

“I never wanted applause,” I said quietly. “I just wanted basic kindness.”

That hit harder than anger ever could.

Then Ethan touched my back gently.

“We should go.”

I nodded.

As we turned toward the exit, my father called after me.

“Claire, wait.”

I stopped.

“We need to talk.”

I looked at the man who had spent my entire life teaching me I would always come second.

“No,” I said calmly. “You need to think.”

Then Ethan and I walked out together.
