At 98, She Moved Into a Care Home So She Could Stay Close to Her 80-Year-Old Son

When Ada Keating was 98 years old, she made an unusual decision.

She moved into a care home.

But she wasn’t moving there because she needed to become a resident herself.

She wanted to be closer to her son.

Her son, Tom, was 80 years old and had lived with his mother for most of his life. He had never married, and the two had remained exceptionally close.

So when Tom moved into a care home, Ada eventually decided she wanted to be there too.

Their routine didn’t disappear simply because they were now living in a care home.

Their Relationship Had Lasted a Lifetime

The story is unusual partly because of the ages involved.

Most people expect parents to become increasingly independent from their adult children as the years pass.

But families don’t all follow the same path.

Some children move away at a young age.

Others remain close to their parents for decades.

In Tom and Ada’s case, living together had become a normal part of their family life.

Their relationship continued well into old age.

Sometimes Family Looks Different

There is no single model for what a family should look like.

For some people, independence means leaving home early, building a career, marrying, and creating a separate household.

For others, family means remaining closely connected across generations.

Neither automatically represents a healthier or happier life.

What matters is whether the arrangement works for the people involved and allows everyone to maintain dignity, choice, and appropriate independence.
