After 5 years of brutal labor in Saudi Arabia, sending home $1,800 a month to fund a luxury mansion, I flew home unannounced to surprise my family. When I arrived, the house was glowing with a lavish party—but my wife and 6-year-old son weren’t inside. I found them starving in the filthy service shed out back, eating spoiled rice while my mother and sister served roasted chicken to their wealthy guests. When my luggage hit the floor, their empire of lies collapsed instantly.

The Foundations of Ash

### Chapter 1: The Weight of Five Years

The heat of **Riyadh** was a physical entity, a bludgeoning force that settled into the marrow of your bones and refused to leave, even when the sun sank below the horizon. For five years, my world had been reduced to the sulfurous smell of welding torches, the deafening scream of diesel generators, and the endless, suffocating dust of a construction site that never seemed to sleep.

My name is **Caleb Vance**. When I left for Saudi Arabia, my son **Jamie** was a toddler who still smelled of baby powder and sweet milk. My wife, **Sarah**, had kissed me goodbye at the airport with tears in her eyes, whispering that she would wait forever.

Forever, it turned out, cost about eighteen hundred dollars a month.

My contract had been structured around a brutal rotation, but an unexpected buyout of our engineering firm meant my project was finished early. No warning. No emails. Just a sudden ticket and a handshake from a supervisor who told me to go home to my family.

I didn’t call. I wanted to see the surprise break across Sarah’s face. I wanted to drop my heavy canvas duffel bag on the floor of the foyer and watch Jamie run across the gleaming Italian marble of the **Bayside Heights** estate—the four-bedroom, white-columned mansion I had financed entirely with the sweat of my skin and the blisters on my hands.

The cab dropped me off at the wrought-iron gates just after nine o’clock on a Friday night. The air here was cooler, damp with the coming autumn, carrying the faint, sweet scent of manicured lawns. But as I walked up the circular drive, the atmosphere felt wrong.

Music thrummed through the double-paned mahogany doors. A bright, amber glow spilled from every window on the ground floor. Laughter—shrill, careless, and expensive—echoed across the patio.

My mother, **Gertrude**, and my sister, **Prudence**, were hosting again. They had always loved the pageantry of wealth, viewing my remittances not as life-insurance for our family, but as a standing invitation to play high-society hostesses.

*She’s out shopping,* my mother had told me on the phone just last Tuesday, her voice flat and dismissive when I asked to speak to Sarah. *She’s at the salon. She can’t come to the phone right now.*

I had believed her. Because in the hierarchy of blood, you give your mother the benefit of the doubt, even when the pauses on the line stretch just a fraction too long, and even when an old, cold dread whispers in the back of your mind.

I didn’t go to the front door. I decided to use the service entrance around the back, cutting across the immaculate, dew-soaked grass toward the old brick patio. I wanted to drop my bags in the mudroom, clean the grit of five years off my face, and walk into that party like a ghost returning from the dead.

Instead, I found the graveyard.
